By the time of the election in November 1968, LBJ had evidence Nixon had sabotaged the Vietnam war peace talks. Nixon feared a breakthrough at the Paris Peace talks designed to find a negotiated settlement to the Vietnam war, and he knew this would derail his campaign. In late October 1968 there were major concessions from Hanoi which promised to allow meaningful talks to get underway in Paris – concessions that would justify Johnson calling for a complete bombing halt of North Vietnam. To sabotage these efforts, Nixon set up a clandestine back-channel involving Anna Chennault, a senior campaign adviser, who convinced the South Vietnamese pull out of peace talks, with promises of them getting a better deal if Nixon was elected President. This helped Nixon get elected, resulting in the war dragging on years afterwards, causing the unnecessary deaths of thousands of U.S. Troops and the deaths of South Vietnamese.
Members of Ronald Reagan’s presidential campaign covertly negotiated with Iranian leaders to undermine incumbent President Jimmy Carter by delaying the release of 66 American hostages detained in Iran. The 88 County Problem
In the 2024 presidential election, Donald Trump won less than 50% of the popular vote, and he carried only 30 out of 50 states, yet, he still managed to win all seven swing states. Moreover, he managed to something else that would, by all outward appearances, appear to be virtually impossible: he got all 88 counties that flipped to flip in one direction – from Democrat to Republican.
The majority voted for Democrat Senate candidates in Swing States; Wisconsin, Michigan, Nevada, Arizona and North Carolina. It is inconceivable that the majority of the people who voted for Democrat Senate candidates (down ballot) would have ALL switched parties and voted for Trump. In this highly polarized political climate, people usually vote straight ticket, either Democrat or Republican.
