Sen. Eric Schmitt made complete a fool of himself at Jack Smith’s hearing, accusing Smith of perjury over an Atlanta Hawks game he never went to. Smith was at a women’s game watching Caitlin Clark, and he spent the rest of the hearing repeating under oath that Trump is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
Schmitt is one of Trump’s most reliable attack dogs.
His theory, as reported by NBC News and CNN, went like this. Smith secretly went to a Hawks vs. Warriors game in February 2024, right after Fani Willis admitted her relationship with Nathan Wade. Therefore, some shadowy coordination against Trump. His proof? A poster board. Text messages from Smith’s staff asking whether seat “109 Row 1” was reserved for the boss. None of them actually mentioned Atlanta. Smith said he never went to that game. Schmitt accused him of perjury and called him a “total dirtbag.” Then Amy Klobuchar took the mic. The Minnesota senator gave Smith a chance to answer, and he did. He’d been at Maryland vs. Iowa in College Park, a women’s game, to see Clark play.

Klobuchar checked the date on the spot, then turned to Schmitt. “People should have their facts straight before they accuse someone of being a dirtbag,” she told him. She said the smear deserved an apology. Later she added on X: “As a Gopher fan, I know the difference between the Hawks and the Hawkeyes.” So how did Schmitt’s team blow it this badly? According to CNN, they searched every NBA and men’s college game on the schedule that night and found only the Hawks. It apparently never occurred to them that a grown man might buy a ticket to watch women play.That’s the whole Republican playbook in one prop. You can’t beat the evidence, so you go after the prosecutor’s weekend plans. And the evidence is brutal. Smith told senators he would charge any former president on the same facts, whether that president was a Democrat or a Republican. Two separate grand juries agreed the case was real.
A president who lost an election and schemed to stay in power anyway. Nuclear-grade secrets stashed in a bathroom and a party ballroom at Mar-a-Lago. Repeated efforts to hide them from investigators. Any other American does prison time for a fraction of that. One man got a pass, and his allies got a hearing to harass the guy who tried to hold him to the same rules as everyone else. Republicans had hours to rebut that case. They chose a basketball ticket.
Like all reprehensible Radical Right Wing Republicans who lack decency, Schmitt never apologized. He went on the Charlie Kirk Show, where the host praised him for “catching” Smith. Then he posted on X: “Who knew Jack Smith was a Caitlin Clark fan?”

The legal case may be thin, but the decision sits with Trump’s former defense lawyer, running a Justice Department that has already indicted James Comey twice.
