U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) on Thursday spoke on the U.S. Senate floor to expose the unprecedented corruption of the Trump administration’s first six weeks in office. Murphy condemned Trump’s normalization of pay-to-play politics, where billionaire donors dictate policy and taxpayer money is funneled into the pockets of the president, Elon Musk, and the corporate elite.
“In the first six weeks of the Trump presidency, Trump and Elon Musk and their billionaire friends have engaged in a stunning rampage of open public corruption,” Murphy said. “It’s not fundamentally different than what happened in Russia. These are efforts to steal from the American people to enrich themselves. And their strategy is to do it all out in the open, to do it at such a dizzying pace that the country just gets overwhelmed or anesthetized or dulled into a sense that we just all have to accept the corruption – or, maybe more charitably, that this is just how government works, that government is just corrupt, and so the fact that it’s happening out in the open instead of happening secretly, well, it’s really nothing new.”
Murphy laid out more than 20 examples of blatant corruption from just the first six weeks of the Trump presidency, including:
- The launch of Trump’s meme coin, enabling anyone seeking to influence the administration to privately funnel money directly to the president.
- The gutting and manipulation of watchdog agencies like the NLRB, CFPB, and OSHA to benefit Elon Musk, the billionaires in Trump’s cabinet, and other elites.
- The Eric Adams quid pro quo and the weaponization of the DOJ to reinforce a system of political retribution and favoritism.
- The use of government contracts and stock deals to reward Trump’s allies, enriching them through taxpayer-funded opportunities and further consolidating political power.
“This is how democracies die,” Murphy continued. “Democracies die when the very powerful people steal from us so regularly, so openly, so unapologetically, that we come to believe that it’s normal. And listen, I understand that many Americans may think that all of this stuff just used to happen quietly, and the only difference is that Trump and Musk are just putting it all out in the open. And I’m not saying that there haven’t been instances of corruption. Democrats and Republicans in this body have been accused of, and convicted of, acts of corruption. It has been a fact of life in American politics for a long time. But never before has the corruption happened this openly or this frequently. And so I lay it all out for you this afternoon in the hopes that it is not too late for us to decide to stand up, as a body and as a nation, to say that this isn’t okay.”

Trump is forcing his Justice Department to go after his political enemies for mortgage fraud, and like always, this appears to be pure projection on Trump’s part. An investigation by ProPublica has revealed that Trump likely did the exact same thing he’s accusing everyone else of doing, which is taking out mortgages for homes and then violating the terms of the loan by renting out the properties. This happened in the 1990’s, so the statute of limitations would prevent any prosecution, but it does explain why Trump thinks he can bust everyone else for this very specific crime

Donald Trump is threatening to prosecute and imprison his political enemies. Experts on democracy and the rule of law told USA TODAY the risk is real.

Bush, likened the comments to a vision of President Vladimir Putin’s Russia, where Putin’s political opponents end up behind bars on charges such as “extremism” or “treason” after criticizing his regime.
“It’s extremely dangerous for democracy, this idea that the winner just puts the loser in prison, prosecutes the loser,” Painter told USA TODAY.
Trump Campaign National Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told USA TODAY in an email that Trump “believes anyone who breaks the law should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, including criminals who engage in election fraud.”
“Without free and fair elections, you can’t have a country. Ask Venezuela,” Leavitt said.
The former president has previously suggested prosecuting his rivals would be legitimate revenge for his own legal troubles, which include one criminal conviction in New York state court and three other criminal cases. Painter said that argument ignores some stark differences between Trump’s own situation and what he is threatening to do.
“Joe Biden never campaigned on a promise to put Donald Trump in prison,” Painter said. “When Donald Trump engaged in the conduct he did, an independent prosecutor was appointed,” he added, referring to special counsel Jack Smith, who has significant independence from Justice Department leadership and secured grand jury indictments in the two federal cases Trump faces, one alleging Trump unlawfully attempted to subvert the 2020 election and the other alleging he mishandled classified documents”.

Trump Threatens NY DA Alvin Bragg in violation of NY state law
“Former President Donald Trump threatened New York District Attorney Alvin Bragg, as Bragg investigates and prepares to indict Trump for his earlier New York crimes. Specifically, Trump indicates there will be “death and destruction” if Bragg indicts hims. Then, Trump commits a second crime by posting a picture of himself, holding a baseball bat, mid-swing, next to a picture DA Bragg whose hand is upraised as if in a defensive posture.
This conduct by Trump violates New York penal law section 195.05, obstructing governmental administration in the second degree: “a person is guilty of obstructing governmental administration in the second degree when that person intentionally . . . attempts to prevent a public servant from performing an official function, by means of intimidation or interference . . . ”

A) Revoking security clearances and threatening companies that hire law firms that represent interests seen as adverse to the president personally or to his policies.
B) Threatening judges with impeachment for adverse rulings. Although removal is not a serious possibility with Republicans’ narrow edge in the Senate, the public nature of the threats could embolden actors to engage in private violence. That threat is real given the president’s constitutional and lawful but outrageous pardoning of even the most violent January 6 insurrectionists.
C) Failing to comply with court orders. Even as President Trump says that he always complies with court orders, his lieutenants have questioned the obligation to do so, and, more importantly, his administration has failed to comply (e.g., by not restoring funding when ordered to do so), even while disingenuously claiming to comply (e.g., by contending that Judge James Boasberg’s order in the case involving renditions to El Salvador didn’t count because it was oral).
All of the foregoing examples in the top tier because they undergird everything else. If persons and firms subject to unlawful orders cannot obtain legal representation and/or cannot depend on the courts to rein in the administration’s illegality, then the president can, as a practical matter, do whatever he wants. That would not be entirely true if there were a reasonable prospect of pushback from Congress, but while individual Republican Senators have voiced opposition to the tariffs, the House leadership will not oppose Trump, at least not yet.
In tier 2, the following actions aimed at curbing criticism of the regime:
A) Revocation of visas for permanent residents and students in retaliation for speech that would be clearly protected if engaged in by U.S. citizens—and is in fact protected for non-citizens as well.
B) Withdrawal or freezing of funding for research at universities that, in the administration’s view, insufficiently cracked down on Gaza-related protests or insufficiently committed to barring transgender female athletes’ participation in women’s sports. In addition to violating free speech and academic freedom, these actions violate numerous federal statutory provisions setting procedural and substantive limits on funding withdrawals.
C) Threatening and in some instances bringing borderline-frivolous or actually frivolous litigation against journalists and news outlets for airing constitutionally protected opinion, resulting in settlements that are tantamount to extortion. These actions are not only corrupt; they and others aim to intimidate the press.
d) Unlawful firings of agency personnel via DOGE or otherwise, across the entire federal bureaucracy. Apart from the imposition of the “reciprocal” tariffs, these actions have caused the most widespread harm and will have lasting effects, even if they are reversed by the courts or a subsequent Democratic administration (in the event that there are ever free and fair elections in the future), because it will take decades to rebuild the expertise and capacity that have been sacrificed
