Missouri Republicans, at Trump’s urging, called a special session to gerrymander and redraw the state’s congressional lines to eliminate a Democratic seat held by Representative Emanuel Cleaver. More than three hundred thousand Missourians signed a referendum petition to stop it, nearly three times what the state required, and the Missouri Supreme Court unanimously ruled the petition was valid and the gerrymandered map never took effect. But Secretary of State Denny Hoskins defied that ruling, followed orders from a single Trump-appointed district judge instead, and posted on social media about communists while Missouri Republican lawmakers literally threatened to impeach state Supreme Court justices.
The highest court in the country said no. The full Supreme Court, with zero public dissents, stayed the federal judge’s order and restored the 2022 congressional districts for November. The Trump administration’s own solicitor general argued to keep the gerrymander in place, and the court blocked it anyway.
